Introduction

Kathleen York House is a 24 hour residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation program for women and their children. Kathleen York House is committed to assisting women who are dealing with the impact of domestic violence, eating disorders, sexual abuse and depression.

Mission Statement

Kathleen York House provides a residential rehabilitation program for women who wish to recover from drug and alcohol addiction and who may also experience dual disorders.

Our mission is to provide a service which will assist women to take responsibility for their decisions and their lives. To take a courageous look at where they have come from, why they are here and where they wish to go now. Taking responsibility is the first step on the road to empowerment

History

Kathleen York House is a residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation program for women and their children. Kathleen York House is committed to assisting women who are dealing with the impact of domestic violence, eating disorders, sexual abuse and depression.

The house itself is a handsome 19th Century building which initially has been a community hospital and later an art gallery. It is centrally located in Glebe and is ideally situated to allow for transition back into mainstream community living. The house is run by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation of NSW through private and some government funding. Kathleen York House is named after the late Mrs. Kathleen York and has been furnished and equipped with funds from the York bequest, and donations from private benefactors.

Kathleen York provides a safe, nurturing and supportive environment essential for recovery and for developing a drug-free lifestyle. We have room for 6 women and their children.

Each woman is seen as unique in the development of her substance dependency. Women are helped to examine thoughts, feelings and behaviours that have contributed to substance abuse, with the help and wisdom of a community of other women who have had a similar experience. The community is run in such a way as to address and resolve negative feelings, providing a re-socialization experience which encourages a stronger sense of self and belonging.

In 2006 Kathleen York House became a 24 hour service.
